Notes for Thomas GOODING | ||||||||||||
Thomas attended the free School of the Presbyterian Church in Geelong, while helping on the farm. Later he went droving, earning enough to buy a farm in the Sale - Trafalgar district, where members of his family still reside today. Gooding, Thomas , Morwell, is a native of Somersetshire , England, where he was born in 1842. He came out to Victoria by the ship Sea Queen, and spent his school days at the Free School of the Presbyterian Church, Geelong, which he was attending at the time that Sir Charles Hotham arrived. After that he spent eight years on his father's farm. He was engaged in droving all over the colonies for ten years ; then going to Gippsland , he selected 200 acres of land, on which his first task was to cut timber wherewith to build a house . In 188o he was burnt out, and, being uninsured , suffered considerable loss. He carries on general and dairy farming, and makes on an average 6o lbs, of butter per week. His land is now worth £12 per acre. Mr. Gooding was married at Geelong to Miss Blair (a native of Geelong ) in 1876, and has a family of five children. 24 |
